A Coronary Angiogram is an invasive diagnostic procedure performed in a cardiac catheterization laboratory (cath lab). It uses X-ray imaging and a liquid contrast dye to visualize the blood flow inside your heart's arteries. It is considered the gold standard for diagnosing blockages or narrowings in the coronary arteries that supply blood to the heart muscle.
The doctor inserts a thin plastic tube (catheter) through an artery in your wrist or groin, guiding it up to the heart. Contrast dye is injected, and live X-ray images (angiograms) are recorded. The area is numbed with local anesthesia, and you remain awake but comfortable. The procedure takes about 20 to 30 minutes, followed by a brief recovery period in the ward.
