Pacemaker Implantation (Temporary & Permanent)

Pacemaker Implantation is a minor surgical procedure where a small electronic generator is placed beneath your skin (typically just under your collarbone). The device is connected to thin insulated wire leads that are threaded through a vein and anchored into your heart chambers. The pacemaker continuously monitors your heartbeat and, if it slows down or pauses, sends gentle electrical signals to stimulate a normal heartbeat.

Why it is done:

  • Treat symptomatic bradycardia (pathologically slow heart rate)
  • Manage Heart Block (interrupted electrical signaling inside the heart)
  • Prevent symptoms like severe dizziness, fainting (syncope), and shortness of breath
  • Coordinate electrical signals between chambers (cardiac resynchronization therapy) for heart failure

What to expect:

The procedure is done under local anesthesia with conscious sedation. The doctor makes a small incision under the collarbone, places the leads into the heart, and connects them to the pacemaker generator, which is tucked into a small pocket under the skin. The procedure takes about 1 to 2 hours, and patients are usually discharged the next day with simple wound-care instructions.
