Coronary Angioplasty, also called Percutaneous Transluminal Coronary Angioplasty (PTCA), is a minimally invasive procedure used to open clogged heart arteries. It is performed in a catheterization laboratory (cath lab) by a cardiologist. The procedure involves inserting a tiny balloon catheter to compress the plaque against the artery wall and typically placing a mesh tube (stent) to keep the artery permanently open.
A catheter is guided to the heart blockage. A tiny balloon at the tip is inflated to compress the fatty buildup. In most cases, a metal stent (often drug-eluting) is left in place to keep the artery open. Local anesthesia is used, and the procedure takes about 45 to 90 minutes. You will typically stay overnight in the hospital for monitoring.
