2D Echocardiography, or 2D Echo, is a non-invasive ultrasound imaging test that provides detailed real-time images of your heart. It allows cardiologists to inspect the structure of your heart, check the chambers, monitor blood flow direction and speed, and evaluate the movement of your heart walls and valves.

Why it is done:

• Assess the overall pumping strength of the heart (Ejection Fraction)
• Inspect heart valves for stenosis (narrowing) or regurgitation (leakage)
• Diagnose cardiomyopathy (enlarged or thickened heart muscles)
• Detect fluid accumulation in the sac surrounding the heart

What to expect:

You will lie on an exam table, and a clear gel will be applied to your chest. The technician will move an ultrasound wand (transducer) across your chest to project sound waves that build the live heart image on a monitor. The test takes about 20 to 30 minutes, is entirely painless, and has no side effects.
