Treadmill Test (TMT)

A Treadmill Test (TMT), also known as a cardiac stress test, is used to determine how well your heart handles work/physical stress. As your body works harder during the test, it requires more oxygen, causing the heart to pump more blood. The test monitors your heart rate, rhythm, and blood pressure while you walk on a treadmill to reveal if the blood supply is reduced in the arteries that feed the heart.

Why it is done:

  • Detect Coronary Artery Disease (narrowed heart arteries)
  • Identify abnormal heart rhythms (arrhythmias) brought on by exertion
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of your heart treatment or bypass surgery
  • Help establish safe limits for patient exercise and rehabilitation

What to expect:

Electrodes will be attached to your chest to record your ECG, and a blood pressure cuff will be placed on your arm. You will walk on a treadmill that gradually increases in speed and slope. The doctor will monitor your vitals until your heart rate reaches a target goal, or until you experience symptoms like chest pain or fatigue. The test usually takes around 15 to 20 minutes.
